Scotland and Wales class have been building!

We have been exploring the traditional tale ‘The Three Little Pigs.’ The children have loved joining in with the repetitive language in the story as well as acting out the story in the role-play area. One of our favourite activities was building with bricks, like the third Little Pig. We began by thinking of the materials we would need in order to build our wall, some children wrote down a list using their phonic knowledge. The children demonstrated high levels of involvement and enthusiasm during the activity and excellent teamwork.

We made some cement using sand and water. The children helped using a shovel to mix it all up.
“It’s like when you make a cake!”
“I think we need to add more sand, It’s gone too sloppy!”

We experimented using a variety of tools which involved lots of maths opportunities. Finley decided it would be a good idea to use a tape measure first to make sure our wall was going to be the right size. Azra used a trowel to “plop” the cement on to the bricks and then smooth it off! Iris curiously picked up the spirit level to ensure we were keeping it straight.

After all of our hard work we stopped for a tea break, “Just like real builders!” Oliver said.
