Year 3 have been tackling some difficult problems using their knowledge of place value.

In this Nrich activity, the children had to decode 6 different numbers written in 5 different languages/scripts. We used our knowledge of place value to first identify all the numbers that represented 100. Megan said “100 has 3 digits so the numbers with 3 symbols will be 100.”

We then knew we could identify the scripts for the number 2 because they were a single symbol. Ruby said “These must be 2 because they only have 1 symbol”

This has consolidated our understanding of place value and the use of a symbol to represent number. The children were able to persevere with this difficult problem even when they found it tough!
