STEM week in Reception got off to a flying start on Monday when the RAF Juno landed on our field! Flight Lieutenants Tom Knapp and PJ Howard answered our questions and showed us around the aircraft.
One Reception child said “This is the best day ever!’
STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics was the focus across both Reception Classes this week and the children took part in a variety exciting and challenging activities.
We listened to the story ‘Iggy Peck Architect’ by Andrea Beaty. It is about a boy with a real passion for building fabulous creations. We looked at lots of different types of bridges from all over the world. We talked about how they worked and what materials they were made from. Inspired by this wonderful book, we decided to use items in the classroom to build our own bridges, just like Iggy! The children worked with a partner. They made plans, shared ideas, used excellent vocabulary, applied mathematical knowledge and tested their bridges!
On Wednesday Mr Roberts taught us! He brought along a construction kit and demonstrated how to use it. He provided Scotland and Wales children with a variety of challenges to complete across the morning.
