A new year and a new topic in Year 5!
We have been happy to welcome all our pupils back after the Christmas break and everyone has made a great start to the new half-term.
This term our topic is South America. Last week we found out where South America is situated on a world map and found out which countries make up South America. This week we have been using an atlas to look at South America and where the amazon rainforest is situated. We also introduced longitude and latitude along with an introduction of the ‘imaginary line’ called the equator!
This week in Maths we have been learning all about fractions. To help us get started we began by looking at equivalent fractions. We then moved onto comparing fractions with the same denominator to see which was the biggest. Once we had mastered that we moved onto investigating finding the common denominator of 2 or more fractions. Next week, they will be investigating mixed numbers and improper fractions.
In English, we have started a new class text called ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry. This beautiful illustrated story has allowed us to journey deep into the Brazilian rainforest where a man has come to chop down The Kapok Tree. The book has stimulated some great discussions in class and the children have been writing excellent character and setting descriptions. This week the children have written a dilemma story based on the book.
