Native American Art in Year 1
This week we have been busy interpreting our own Native American patterns as part of our topic work on Pocahontas. The children used oil pastels to create colourful patterns.
Madrid and Paris class were fantastic at interpreting the art work and creating their own patterns using vibrant colours. They looked really effective!
In English we have been continuing with the story ‘My Brother’ by Anthony Browne. This week children have used a picture from the story to write a sentence. Throughout the piece of work children have been working on using their sounds, finger spaces, full stops and capital letters. Children have also been working on sentence structure through child initiated learning. Child initiated activities have included creating play doh monster and writing a sentence about the monster, picking an animal and writing a sentence about the animal and picking a setting to write a sentence for. Children have also been continuing to focus on letter formation on one activity. We have one more week of ‘My Brother’ next week before we move onto a new unit of work.
In Maths we have moved onto numbers 0-30. We have done lots of practical counting work, reading and writing numbers. Child initiated learning has been based around these numbers and ensuring the children fully understand these numbers. The activities have included picture frame numbers, showing a number in numicon, ‘read, write and show’ a number and one more and one less than a given number. One activity has continued to focus on number formation. Next week we will be reading, writing and counting numbers to 40.
In Science we have been learning all about how animals can be classified into reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians, fish and insects. On Thursday, the children sorted a number of animals into these classifications. Next week we will be classifying animals based on what they eat.
In Phonics we are currently recapping phase 3 sounds. Our main focus has been ‘ear, air, ure and er’. In the coming weeks we will be sending out information about a phonics workshop. The workshop is aimed to help you support your child with their sounds at home. Please look out for this important date.
