Letters From The Lighthouse
Year 6 have started the new school year with a mini mission based on the book ‘Letters From The Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll. The book is set in World War Two and is about two evacuees called Olive and Cliff who were evacuated to Devon. We started week one by making a timeline to show which countries were invaded and when. During week two, we focused on evacuation and looked in detail at what items the children were expected to take in their suitcase and which areas around the country they were sent to. The children also carried out their own internet research to find out any unanswered questions about evacuation. During week three, we worked hard to put all of our research together to write a non-chronological report based on evacuation. We have also started designing and making lighthouses using plastic bottles and cups. The challenge is for the children to design a lighthouse using different materials and an electrical circuit. During week 4, we will be creating some blackout poetry using pages from the book and looking more in detail at The Kindertransport.
We have both been very impressed with the high interest and engagement towards the book so far! Well done year 6!
