Ellesmere Primary School’s sports success is etched in gold

Ellesmere Primary School struck gold for a second successive year after their dedication to getting children active was recognised.
The Elson Road school have retained their gold School Games Mark, part of a government scheme aimed at rewarding schools’ commitment to supporting pupils in sport.
Ellesmere have appointed a full time PE teacher and sped through swimming galas, aced athletics, glittered at gymnastics and conquered cross country runs.
Each week more than 70% of children take part in one or more of 20 extracurricular sports clubs, and teachers are now targeting platinum status in 2020.
PE Leader Gemma Vaughan said: “Sport is an integral part of our programme.
“Not only does it help the children stay fit and healthy, but they learn the importance of sporting values and team-work.
“The gold award has recognised our commitment to all children, and our ability to nurture and develop talented athletes.
“We are delighted, and now we aim to win gold again for the next three years, which would earn us platinum status.
“The children have all shown determination and great teamwork. We are all really impressed with their achievements.”
Hazel Adams started as a full-time PE teacher at Ellesmere last September. Miss Vaughn added: “Having Hazel means we are able to offer clubs before school, at lunch time and after school.
“It’s allowed us to run more house sports events in PE lessons and try a variety of different sports in lessons. Hazel is also able to work closely with the Year 6 sports leaders.”
All children, from Nursery through to Year 6, have had the opportunity to take part in sports days and they have successfully translated what they’ve learned during PE lessons to a competitive arena with a range of successes at local and county levels.
Ellesmere Primary is part of North West Academies Trust (NWAT), which runs a number of academies across Shropshire and Cheshire.
Steve Docking, CEO of NWAT, believes sport is a great way to raise confidence, improve fitness and encourage teamwork.
He said: “We operate PE programmes across all our academies which ensure all children can compete in some form of sport.
“All children are recognised for participating, and, with the extra opportunities they are given to shine, we see them grow in confidence which can help them in all aspects of school life.”
At all NWAT schools, children are encouraged to learn through new experiences and challenge themselves to achieve their very best.
Having joined the Trust in September 2016, the school is showing consistent improvements in attainment across all subjects and increased pupil numbers, with maths being a particular strength, moving from 67% in 2016 to 80% last year.
