Bonfire night celebrations have been the focus of English in Year 1 this week through ‘Crackle! Spit!’ poem.
Children have started a new unit of work in English this week and have been learning the poem’Crackle! Spit!’ a poem about bonfire night. The focus this week has been rhyming words and children have been creating rhyming strings in teacher groups. Through child initiated learning, children have been completing art collages, labeling firework pictures and performing the poem with friends. Next week children will be writing their own rhyming poem.
We have also started a new unit of work in Maths this week, addition. Children have been learning how to solve addition number sentences practically by creating the two numbers, putting them altogether and counting how many they have got. Children will be applying this understanding to finding the answers for number sentences by drawing pictures in teacher groups next week. We will also be applying our understanding through child initiated activities.
Children have now come to the end of the topic unit. On Monday, children will be given the opportunity to chose a new topic based around Christmas. We have decided to link our topic work with our Christmas play this term. Next week our Christmas play will be revealed, we are very excited!
On Friday, all children in Year 1 took part in ‘The Big First Aid Lesson’. The lesson is a live online first aid lesson which provides children with basic safety for bonfire night. We found the lesson really useful and learnt about how to stay safe and what to do in an emergency.
In PE children are going to working on three different sports each week. The sports this term are rugby, netball and gymnastics. Children will be learning skills within these sports and applying them to a game situation.
