What a busy week for year 1

This week has been very busy, with lots of visitors coming into class to watch the children in Maths, English and Phonics. They all coped extremely well and showed off how AMAZING they are!

In Maths we have continued to write addition equations from a picture, bar model and cherry model. We have learnt about which numbers in an addition equation are the ‘addends’ and which number is the ‘sum’. Over the next two weeks we are going to have a focus on mental recall facts for the numbers 0-10. We would like all children to be able to answer questions such as 4 + 5, 3 + 7, 4 + 4 etc without counting on but knowing the addition fact.

We have now finished our unit on space. This week we carried out a science experiment, drew the picture ‘Starry Night’ by Van Gough and used adjectives to write a description for an alien.

This afternoon we have had the start of our hook into our new mini mission on toys and watched Wall-E linking to both our new mini mission and our previous mini mission on the environment. Over the next 3 weeks children will be looking at how toys have changed over time and designing their own robot just like WALL-E. During the unit of work we will also be focusing on instructions and how to write instructions.
