The Early Years Foundation Stage

At Ellesmere Primary School we deliver a curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. This describes the seven areas of learning and development which are implemented through planned, purposeful play.

Our aim is to provide a warm, happy and stimulating environment where all children are encouraged to develop lively minds, active skilful bodies, confidence, independence and caring attitudes towards others and their environment. We plan and provide a wide-range of enjoyable and stimulating activities, through which children can explore the world around them, make discoveries, solve problems, and relate to other children and adults.

We have a very experienced team who all aim to challenge and extend children’s thinking, to encourage curiosity and reflect on their experiences, and to foster language skills to express their thoughts and feelings.

We believe young children learn through play; a rich experience where they have the opportunity to make plans and choices, to be creative, to investigate, to practice skills, to set their own pace, to concentrate, to communicate with others and to build a feeling of confidence and self-esteem. We provide for play of many different types, both indoors and out, in open-ended, child-initiated and structured activities.

We offer a careful balance of informal activities and more structured experiences, and opportunities for children to work in small and large groups as well as individually. Throughout this approach, we aim to ensure that each child benefits from the full range of activities across the Foundation Stage and develops skills and attitudes which lay a foundation for successful lifelong learning.
